Five day tour option.

If time is a constraint, but you are determined not to miss out on the monarch butterfly sanctuaries, this tour is for you. Experience the rich colonial history of Morelia, Queen of the Colonial Cities, and experience two fascinating butterfly sanctuaries in this 5-day adventure.

The Monarch Butterfly and City Tour starts on Tuesday or Saturday during the butterfly migration season.

DAY 1

Arrive in Morelia.  Rocamar Tour operator will meet you at the airport and escort you to our downtown hotel.

DAY 2

After a leisurely breakfast we will meet our tour guide at the hotel to begin our tour of Morelia “Queen of the Colonial Cities.” Morelia is rich in history, culture and architectural marvels.  By the end of the tour you will be convinced the title is well earned.   The afternoon can be spent exploring the candy market, taking in more sights around the city or relaxing at an outdoor café watching life in Morelia.  Before dinner we will have a video briefing in preparation for our trip to the Monarch Sanctuaries.

Overnight in Morelia.

DAY 3

Following breakfast in the courtyard of our hotel we will enjoy a very scenic drive to the monarch butterfly sanctuaries.  Between November and March the Monarch Butterflies from the United States and Canada migrate to the pine forests of Michoacan. This afternoon we will explore the first of two of Michoacan’s Monarch Butterfly Sanctuaries. A moderate fitness level is required to access the sanctuaries.  Accompanied trail horses are available through local guides.

Overnight in Zitacuaro.

DAY 4

As the sun warms the air we will hike into our favourite sanctuary, Cerro Pelon. We will spend the afternoon marvelling as millions of butterflies flit around us. This is truly an incredible sight. As an option, horses are available in this sanctuary.  At this remote location there are no restaurants.  A local trout farmer will catch our lunch from the spring in the morning and have it ready for us upon returning from the butterfly sanctuary.

Late in the afternoon we will return to the Morelia for over night.

DAY 5

Transfer to airport in Morelia.
